Wheat berries are super nutritious wheat seeds that you'll get if you learn about growing wheatgrass. You can use them to grow wheatgrass for juicing, or you can put them in a wheat grinder for fresh flour.

Berries from wheat aren't actually berries like strawberries or raspberries, which contain the seeds of their mother plants. Instead, they're the actual seeds. They're hard little grains.

The difference between a berry and a seed that you might normally find is that the berry of the wheat contains the entire seed, except for the hull. The berries of wheat are very nutritious – much more so than their stripped-down versions used to make white flour, which has hardly any nutritional value at all! What are Wheat Berries?

The berries are the entire kernel of the grain, including the bran, germ, and endosperm. They're usually reddish brown or tan in color, and are either hard or processed to be softer.

Wheat Berries Nutrition

The berries or kernels of wheat are much more nutritious than so-called “wheat” flour that's made of only the soft interior of the kernels. You don't get all the Health Benefits of Wheatgrass from ground berries, but you do get some benefits from the berries.

For instance, they include lots of protein and only a little healthy fat, vitamins like magnesium, potassium, B vitamins, and Vitamin E. The main nutrient in wheat kernels is carbohydrates – the healthy, unprocessed kind that can give you steady energy and clean out your colon, among other things.

Because the berries aren't sprouted and considered “living foods” you don't get all the benefits of drinking wheatgrass from the berries. However, you do get plenty of benefits, which is great since you can't live on wheatgrass alone!


Whole Wheat Berries

Whole wheat kernels are rarely used in commercial products, so you may want to invest in a wheat grinder that can help you grind up organically grown berries into your own whole wheat flour.

You can also cook the berries similarly to rice and serve them as a side dish. When combined with beans, they give you one of nature's most complete protein sources!

These berries aren't sprayed with harmful pesticides that you may not be able to wash off. Organic seeds tend to grow more readily, as well, since the mother plant wasn't sprayed with harmful pesticides and herbicides during growth. If you're looking at how to grow wheatgrass, using organically grown seeds is your best option.


How to Use Wheat Berries

There are all sorts of ways to use wheat seeds, including the following:

  1. Cook the seeds whole like rice. Allow them to cool, and toss them lightly with olive oil and Mediterranean herbs for a yummy side dish.
  2. Plant them to grow wheatgrass for your wheatgrass juicer so you can always have this delicious, nutritious living food at hand.
  3. Grind them into flour for fresh-baked bread and other homemade products.

Of course, you need a balanced diet, but eating lots of wheat seeds doesn't have any side effects. If you decide to grow wheatgrass for juicing, keep in mind that too much wheatgrass can give you uncomfortable detox side effects, including nausea.


Tips on Buying Wheat Berries

Most kits for growing wheatgrass come with their own wheat seed, but you can also buy them separately. Buy them in bulk, but don't buy more than you can properly store them – usually in the fridge or with special oxygen absorbing packets to keep the little bugs and critters out!
